2007 Virginia DeMolay Humanitarian Award Submission Occoquan Chapter |
|
Since last Conclave, Occoquan Chapter has contributed the following humanitarian and community activities to be considered for this award. Pace West Alternative School Pace School is a Prince William County alternative full time public specialized school in Haymarket, Virginia for troubled students who do not qualify for regular schools. On three occasions during the school year, two Occoquan advisors and approximately five to six DeMolay volunteered to pack their heavy DJ equipment, transport it to the school for a total of about 130 miles and 105 man hours to provide the music for a dance, a talent show, and a line band affair. Shriners Children's Hospital The Shriners support 22 hospitals that provide free specialized care for orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate for children less than 18 years of age. Kena Temple had a fund drive to raise money for the Philadelphia Hospital and at the request of Nate Stallings, International Congress Secretary, Occoquan Chapter first donated $25 and then followed with $100 for a total of $125. ACTS Action In Community Through Service provides many free charitable services throughout Prince William County, one of which is a pantry for the needy and Thanksgiving Dinner baskets. In early November, the DeMolay contributed food items for the ACTS pantry. For Operation Turkey, a DeMolay with an Advisor helped sort items for the turkey dinners for 4 to 6 hours. Declaration of DeMolay Month Eleven Occoquan DeMolay, two Prince William DeMolay and five advisors were awarded a Declaration for March as DeMolay Month. This was a great civic government experience for the DeMolay. The Declaration also called upon the citizens "to join i saluting the young men of the Order of DeMolay and in expressing the County's grateful appreciation of the fine examples set by these young leaders in contributing to the welfare and character of other young men in the community, thus aiding in the development of leadership for tomorrow." A photo and write up appeared in the summer edition of the Masonic Herald. |
