2008 Virginia DeMolay Humanitarian Award Submission Alexandria-Washington Chapter |
|
The members of Alexandria-Washington have been very active in the community during the past year and submit the following activities for consideration: Vietnam Wall Washing Before dawn on June 29, and before the arrival of those wishing to pay their respects -- members of A-W Chapter gathered together, armed with cleaning supplies, hoses and a great deal of patriotic passion, to set forth and honor the memory of the thousands of Vietnam veterans by removing the grit and grime from the granite face of the memorial. The event allowed A-W DeMolay to demonstrate their tremendous respect to service members everywhere. Rose Hill Elementary Autism 5k Run and Health Fair The chapter came out in force to help with both of these events. The first was a 5k race to benefit Autism, with each runner raising money for the cause. DeMolays were positioned at critical points along the route and served as guides to help keep runners on the right track. We also passed out water, and kept track of times at the 1 mile and 2 mile marks. After the race, the crew went inside to assist with a well attended Health and Fitness fair. Many of our DeMolays were put to work creating balloon figures for the children in attendance in addition to helping out in many other ways. Safe Kids Program For the second year in a row the chapter participated in the fantastic Safe Kids-Safe Choices Program. Through this program the members helped facilitate six 1 ½ hour educational sessions designed to help 4th-6th graders avoid gang involvement, feel safe in their neighborhoods, develop skills in peacefully resolving conflict, become more aware of legal consequences of certain choices, and become involved in healthy activities. Not only is this an extremely worthwhile program from the nature of the material being taught, but it is an outstanding way for DeMolay to get out in the public eye so they can see who we are. The program not only gives us good Public Relations but generates membership opportunities as well. Four members have joined as a result of our participation. DeMolay Donation The chapter voted to contribute $100 to one of own. When we heard that the family of a DeMolay from one of area chapters had seen their own home burn down as a result of a large fire, we quickly sent them a donation that we hoped would, in some way, help with the burden of the unexpected expenses brought on by this tragic event. Troops The chapter wrote and sent cards to some of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, just to let them know that their efforts are appreciated and as a show of support. Canned Food Drive The chapter conducted a canned food drive at Christmas. The cans were collected and then distributed to the local shelter for use by those less fortunate. Matthew Costis Fundraiser On Sunday, June 8 we lent a helping hand of support at the Spaghetti Dinner to benefit Matthew Costis. Matthew is the 8 year old grandson of Dad Bill and Mom Cherry Costis and is undergoing radiation therapy to combat some very aggressive brain tumors. The benefit dinner collected several thousand dollars to help his family with the huge medical expenses. |
