2008 Virginia DeMolay Humanitarian Award Submission Cmdr W L Herndon Chapter |
|
The members of Cdr. William L Herndon Chapter has extended their efforts in the community over the 2007-2008 Conclave year with involvement in both local and Masonic efforts as well as two major programs, the Herndon Relay for Life which is a walk to cure cancer and Plane Pull. Relay for Life Cancer has been far too close to home in our chapter in the past, and this year we decided to participate in the local Relay for Life event. We raised just over $1250, which was donated to the American Cancer Association. The money was collected through the end of May and into June. We had 10 members in attendance throughout the event, and were able to keep at least one member of the team on the track from 2pm until 7am. Matthew Costas Herndon DeMolay recognized the dedicated support of the Costas family to the entire realm of Masonry, specifically to the youth. Hearing the unfortunate news about Matthew Costas, the chapter immediately voted to release our almoners fund in it’s entirety to support a worthy family in need, and has been making strong efforts over the summer months to replenish the fund so that a greater donation can be made before the completion of the term. Helping the Needy Over the past year a number of family members of chapter and lodge have been unable to take care of their lawns or have needed personal assistance otherwise. In such cases our chapter has stepped up to provide the dependable care and need for those individuals. Plane Pull Herndon Chapter has pulled a team together and begun fundraising efforts to participate in the Dulles Day Plane Pull, which requires a minimum of $1000 in charity fundraising to participate in the event. We hope that this will be the first of a long running annual civic endeavor for the chapter. |
